WHO WE AREThe Michigan Safe Schools Initiative (SSI) is an informal group of state and local school safety stakeholders who have been meeting for the past eleven years to discuss common issues and bring the strength of the combined players together to address Michigan’s school safety needs. The Initiative was originally funded by a U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Services (COPS) grant to the Michigan Regional Community Policing Institute at Michigan State University. (more)WHAT WE DOIn addition to the annual coordinating and facilitating Michigan Safe Schools Week pledge signing and related activities Initiative members meet quarterly, to:
In the past SSI Workgroup members have assisted legislators in developing language for school safety related legislation (lock-down drills); hosted legislative luncheons and provided information on key topic areas (Bullying, PA 102/No Child Left Behind); worked collectively to deliver training workshops and school safety conferences in various locations around the state; and worked collectively to develop a model bullying curriculum for the state, as well as a model lock-down policy. HOW WE ARE SUPPORTEDAttendance and participation by the various agency representatives has continued at its original 1998 high level throughout the many years of the Initiative’s existence. In the past the Department of Education and Michigan State Police have assisted with the costs of preparing and distributing the 7,000 Safe School Week information packets. Michigan’s economic conditions prohibited that cost share this past year. Safe School Week information and pledges this year will be done on-line.
